Turn a university deadline into a workable plan
A due date tells you when to finish. A preparation plan helps you decide what to do next. Start with the actual requirements, estimate the work involved, and leave time to review before submitting.
Example: prepare a lab report due on Friday
This sample schedule assumes you have already completed the experiment. Adjust the tasks and time available to match your course and workload.
| When | Task | Material to keep nearby |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | Read the rubric and organize measurements. | Instructions, rubric, lab notes |
| Tuesday | Check calculations and label figures. | Data files, formula sheet |
| Wednesday | Write results and develop the discussion. | Figures, report draft, course sources |
| Thursday | Review claims, units, and references. | Draft and marking criteria |
| Friday | Proofread, export, and submit before the deadline. | Final report and submission instructions |
Build the plan in Academic Planner
- Add your course and deadline: Enter them yourself or import a syllabus and review the extracted details before adding them.
- Connect the work: Link the relevant lab report, notes, files, and formula sheets to the deadline.
- Plan preparation: Use Alpha’s planning help to create preparation steps from the linked material. Review the proposed tasks and timing against your other commitments.
- Track completion: Check off tasks as you finish them and adjust your plan when the work or deadline changes.
Check an imported syllabus carefully
Confirm the year, due time, recurring class pattern, and any exceptions such as reading week. A date labelled “week 6” may need clarification from the course schedule. Check instructor announcements for changes after the syllabus was published.
Make tasks specific enough to start
Replace a broad task such as “work on report” with “label the axes and units on the force–extension graph.” Keep the original submission deadline visible even if you set an earlier personal target.
Before you begin
Have your current syllabus, class schedule, and confirmed deadlines ready. Check your course announcements for changes before adding dates to the planner.

Example workflow
Add a chemistry lab-report deadline, attach your lab notes and report, then plan time to organize results, review the discussion, and proofread. Check off preparation tasks as you complete them, keeping the relevant work connected to the deadline.
What to check before finishing
Review every imported date, time, and recurring class before saving. When an instructor changes a deadline, update your plan and check that preparation tasks still leave enough time.
