How to get unstuck on a STEM assignment
Begin by separating the information given from the quantity you need to find. Write down units, draw a diagram where useful, and choose a relationship whose assumptions match the problem. AlphaNote’s focused hint is most useful once you can name the step that is blocking you.
Worked example: force, friction, and acceleration
A block is pulled horizontally with a force of . Friction opposes the motion with a force of . What is the block’s horizontal acceleration? Assume the surface is level and the stated forces stay constant.
- Identify the target: Find acceleration in . The mass is ; the two horizontal forces act in opposite directions.
- Set a direction: Take the pulling direction as positive. The upward normal force and downward weight balance vertically.
- Find the net horizontal force:
- Apply Newton’s second law:In the pulling direction.
- Check the result: is equivalent to . Friction reduces the acceleration below the that the same pull would produce without friction.
Why a plausible answer can still be wrong
Dividing by gives , with the correct units, but it ignores friction. A unit check catches some mistakes; a force diagram and an explicit net-force calculation catch this one.
Use the Alpha helper buttons
- Explain: Clarify what a question asks and connect it to the relevant course concepts.
- Hint: Get a next step when you are stuck, then continue your own solution.
- Check: Submit your attempt for feedback on reasoning, missing steps, and units.
- Worked example, Example, or Plan steps: The fourth helper depends on the question type. Calculation questions offer a worked example with different values; other questions offer an example structure or a plan of action.
Upload the assignment and relevant course notes, open the question, and show the work you have already tried. Providing your attempt makes it easier to focus the feedback.
Example workflow: Write your calculation in the question workspace, then select Check to review your reasoning. If you are unsure how to continue, select Hint. Revise your answer, then use Refresh Check to get feedback on your updated work.
Try the next problem yourself
Keep the mass and pulling force the same, but increase friction to . Predict whether acceleration increases or decreases before calculating it.
Check your answer
The net force is , so acceleration is . It decreases because the opposing force is larger.
Before you begin
Start with your assignment file and rubric. Read the question and identify what you know, what you need to find, and any required units before asking for help.
How to use Assignments
Create your assignment workspace
Upload your assignment files so Alpha can organize the work into clear, manageable questions and tasks.
Open and review the workspace
Open the saved workspace and choose the question or task you want to work through.
Understand the question with Explain
Select Explain for a grounded breakdown of what the question asks and which concepts you need.
Get unstuck with Hint
Select Hint for a useful next step that helps you continue without revealing the complete answer.
Review your answer with Check
After writing your answer, select Check to identify correct reasoning, gaps, and what to improve next.
Example workflow
For a mechanics problem, open the question, identify the forces, and sketch a free-body diagram. Use Explain to clarify the task or Hint to choose a next step. Write your calculation, then use Check to review the reasoning and units before revising your answer.
What to check before finishing
Treat feedback as a second pass on your own work. Compare it with your course material, check calculations independently, and follow your instructor’s rules for AI assistance.
